Delivery novel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A delivery novel is a novel that is delivered to the customer in individual deliveries of one or two sheets , ie 16 or 32 printed pages.

This method of distribution was widespread in the 19th century. Not only was trivial literature brought to customers in this way, this distribution channel was also chosen for works by respected authors or encyclopedias. While the trivial literature remained with the delivery of the sheets, the customers of more sophisticated literature were also supplied with the bindings so that they could have their volumes set by the local bookbinder .

The delivery novel no longer exists today; The closest thing to this method of production and distribution is that of certain reference works, which are sent to the customer sheet by sheet and which he can then put in a folder provided ( loose-leaf collection ). In this way, outdated entries can be revised and replaced - the reference work always remains up to date.
