Country description
As Landesbeschreibung early forms of geographical were land survey indicated. From the 17th century on, it was understood to be a collection of topographic maps combined with textual descriptions of landscapes and cities.
Well-known works of this genre include a .:
- New country description of the two duchies of Schleswig and Holstein from 1652
- the Württemberg description of the country by Jakob Frischlin in 1613, see the saga of the Hirschgulden
- the Codex Welser , an inventory of the Duchy of Jülich from around 1720
- Upper office descriptions in southern Germany, e.g. B. from the Topographical Bureau of the Kingdom of Württemberg
- Johann Goswin Widder's geographical and historical description of the Electoral Palatinate from 1786.
The (still differently named) predecessors of these compilations can be:
- the Carta Marina of Scandinavia and the accompanying commentaries Historia de gentibus septentrionalibus , which Olaus Magnus published in Venice in 1539 after 12 years of work
- the Frisiae descriptio by Henricus Ubbius around 1530.
The New Country Description of the Southern Danish Provinces by Heinrich Rantzau (around 1570) should be understood more in an economic sense .
Current works also have the character of earlier descriptions of the country, e.g. B. the Historical Atlas of Bavaria .
