The Codex Welser is a country description and inventory of the Duchy of Jülich that was created around 1720 . The codex is named after its author Johann Franz von Welser and contains 39 stately portraits and 28 maps of the offices and cities as well as 242 colored drawings of fortified cities and Burglehn (“Ritter / Adeliche und Lehn-Stätt and Flecke Der Gülicher Provintz which in good The construction status is / has been designed here according to the University Library ”) in alphabetical order. The first country table shows the towns of Aldenhoven to Dülcken in 46 miniatures . In addition to the location, under the pictures at castles there is also the information of the former owner, which makes it easier to assign and date the pictures.

Two only slightly different copies are in the Bavarian State Library ( call number Cgm 2635) and in the Historical Archives of the City of Cologne . The Munich copy has now been completely digitized; Structural data within the digital presentation facilitate the search. In addition, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek offers a detailed list of all maps, portraits of people and images of places in its online catalog ( OPAC ).
