Historia de Gentibus Septentrionalibus (History of the Nordic Peoples) is a comprehensive commentary on the Carta Marina , which is dedicated to the description of the Nordic peoples. This "Description of the Peoples of the North" was also written by Olaus Magnus and first printed in 1555 in Rome.

The work is divided into 22 books, each containing dozen of chapters.

The frontispiece reads the following: History of the Nordic peoples, their different living conditions, way of life and physical culture, social behavior, war, buildings and tools, mining and mining technology, wonderful things and about almost all animals in the north, and their nature. A work with a wide range of knowledge, partly illustrated with foreign examples, partly with representations of local things, which are also largely entertaining and will certainly give the reader pleasure.

With its many illustrative woodcuts and its simple language, the entire volume is an encyclopedic representation of the way of life of the people of Scandinavia in the 16th century and describes customs, animal husbandry and natural conditions, with a unique mixture of poetry and truth.
