Seerp Gratama (born October 27, 1757 in Harlingen , † September 19, 1837 in Groningen ) was a Dutch legal scholar .

Life

The son of Tjepke Gratama and Rinske Donker received his first training at the Latin school in his hometown and then at the Athenaeum in Deventer . He then completed a law degree at the University of Franeker , received his doctorate in law in 1783 and then worked as a lawyer in his hometown, where he also worked as a businessman. During the revolutionary unrest he was an officer in the armed civil guard. During this time some of his writings were published.

This brought him in 1797 an appointment as professor of Roman law at the University of Harderwijk , where he was also rector of the Alma Mater in 1798/1799 . In 1801 he went to the University of Groningen as a professor of natural and international law . He took office on September 24, 1801 with the speech Oratio qua docetur: cum homines, tum etiam populos ad justitiam esse natos . Later he also took over the professorship for criminal law, and from 1821 he taught the Code Napoléon . In 1805 and 1816 he was rector of the Groningen University, and in 1827 he retired.
