The Fichte High School, 1957

The Fichte-Gymnasium was a high school in the center of Krefeld . The schoolhouse from 1855 is a listed building. The sponsoring association of the grammar school maintains its own school camp, the Burg Bischofstein .

history

On October 5, 1851 (Krefeld was then part of the Rhine Province ) the school was founded as a two-year provincial trade school for boys. In 1892 it was upgraded to an upper secondary school . In 1937, as part of the National Socialist name renaming, it was given the name Fichte-Schule (after Johann Gottlieb Fichte ). In 1954, the Bischofstein Castle on the Moselle was acquired and rebuilt through the Schullandheim Association . In 1958 and 1968, the school was expanded by a new building. In 1977, unrestricted co-education was introduced.

On February 22, 2003, a fire severely damaged the school. After a year and a half of reconstruction, the reopening of the damaged building was celebrated at the beginning of the 2004/2005 school year.

From 2010 the Fichte-Gymnasium was an all-day school . In 2017 there were only 40 new registrations, so that on August 1, 2018, the school "[...] was closed after more than 165 years of successful school history".

Lessons offered

The Fichte-Gymnasium was based on its tradition scientifically designed. Usually, advanced courses in geography and several natural sciences were held every year in addition to the usual courses. The school was able to do this because it cooperated with the Arndt-Gymnasium (also in Krefeld) in the upper level and the advanced courses were offered to the students of both schools. There were working groups in ice hockey , orchestras , choirs , magic and chemistry, as well as other extracurricular activities.

Student exchange

Fichte-Gymnasium was part of the German-American Partnership Program, a student exchange program, and from 1984 implemented student exchanges with three schools in the USA : Upper Moreland High School in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania , Palisades High School in Kintnersville, Pennsylvania, and West Morris Central High School in Chester, New Jersey .

As part of other programs, student exchanges were also carried out several times with England (Leicester, Lake District ), France (Paris), Turkey (Istanbul), Spain ( Málaga ) and South Africa (Cape Town).

School camp

The Schullandheim Burg Bischofstein

The classes from grades 5 to 8 visited the Schullandheim Burg Bischofstein near Hatzenport on the Moselle for one week (five days) each year . The castle was owned by the Fichte-Gymnasium's development association. Working groups such as the school orchestra or the natural science and theater group also visited the castle every year.

Well-known students and teachers

Well-known high school graduates include the writers Andreas Mand and Ulrich Peltzer , the television presenters Bodo Hauser and Carsten Rüger , the inspector general of the Bundeswehr Dieter Wellershoff , the member of the Bundestag Kerstin Radomski and the ice hockey referee Richard Schütz .

The author Theodor Pelster , the artist Hubertus Gojowczyk and the mathematician Werner Boy were well-known teachers; the author Henning Heske was a student trainee at the grammar school.
