The Historical Association for the Lower Rhine (HVN for short) is a history association that has set itself the goal of researching the history of the Lower Rhine regions and the former Archdiocese of Cologne .

The foundation

It was two historically interested groups to whom the association owes its establishment.

One group had gathered around Anton Fahne at Haus Roland in Düsseldorf , the other group had gathered around Joseph Hubert Mooren , pastor in Wachtendonk near Kleve .

The constituent meeting of the association took place on May 17, 1854 in Cologne , at which Mooren was appointed president and Fahne was at his side as vice-president. This makes the HVN one of the oldest Rhenish history associations. "48 brave men" attended the establishment. The "invitation to participate in the historical association of the Lower Rhine including the entire Archdiocese of Cologne", written and signed by Fahne at his "castle" Roland, dated June 2, 1854.

The invitation described the following "main objectives" of the association:

“Preservation and collection of all historical and rare monuments including all chronicles. Certificates, necrologies, copy books, either in the original or in copy; Research into manners, customs, folk life, legends and myths and recording them.
Publication of a magazine in two main departments:
I. Sources of history.
II. Monographs based on historical sources.
Annual general meetings for lectures on historical objects from the area of the association, relevant inquiries, exclusions, suggestions, etc. "

The board was composed as follows and was elected for three years as evidenced by the invitation mentioned above:

“Pastor Moore as President.
Mr. Justice of the Peace Anton Fahne as Vice-President.
Mr. Wilhelm Eissenbarth as secretary.
Dr. Ennen to the Vice-Secretary.
Mr. Jos. Bachem to the treasurer. "

The seat of the association was still unclear. This should be determined at the first general assembly. It took place on August 16 in Düsseldorf.

"After eliminating various obstacles and difficulties, a definitive board was elected here until August 16, 1855, as was a scientific committee, and the city of Cologne was chosen as the seat of the association."

The board was completely replaced at this meeting except for moors:

“President: Mooren, Pastor, in Wachtendonk.
Vice President: Hagens, von, District Court Council, in Düsseldorf,
Secretary: Dr. Ennen, Vicar, in Koenigswinter.
Archivist: Dr. Cancer, in Cologne.
Treasurer: J. Bachem, bookseller, in Cologne. "

The scientific commission was composed as follows:

"Dr. Eckertz, high school teacher, in Cologne.
Fischbach, justice of the peace, in Bensberg.
Dr. Krebs, editor of the Deutsche Volkshalle in Cologne. "

In addition, a further 170 members of the association are proven at this point in time. In 1890 the association had about 800 members.

In addition to organizing exhibitions and conferences, the association is responsible for the 206 volumes of the annals of the Historical Association for the Lower Rhine (AHVN for short), one of the most important publication organs on the history of the Rhineland, which are published in cooperation with the University of Duisburg .

The former chairman (from 1979 to 1995), the historian and librarian Severin Corsten , was elected honorary chairman for his services to the association and the history of the Rhineland .
