Heinz Finger (born May 12, 1948 in Wuppertal ) is a German librarian and historian .

Live and act

Finger studied history, German and English in Cologne, Freiburg and Cambridge. After receiving his doctorate in German studies (subject: studies on " Muspilli " ) at the University of Cologne in 1977, he entered the higher library service. He initially worked as a trainee lawyer at the Stuttgart State Library and as an assistant at the University of Mainz . From 1982 to 2001 he was head of the special collections and the manuscript department at the University and State Library in Düsseldorf .

From 2001 to the end of 2015 he was director of the Archbishop's Diocesan and Cathedral Library in Cologne . During his time as library director, he researched and published on numerous cross-epoch-spanning aspects of Cologne's church history, including Rainald von Dassel , the translation of the Three Kings , the Cologne archbishops as territorial lords in the early modern period, and the death of Engelbert von Berg . In contrast to the majority of research, he interpreted the latter not as a targeted murder attempt, but rather as a failed attempt at kidnapping. He is considered to be one of the best experts on the history of the Rhenish region in the late Middle Ages and early modern times. As a church historian , he has also repeatedly distinguished himself with contemporary historical contributions on the situation of Christian communities outside Europe (for example, the Christians in today's Iraq). Under his leadership as director of the Archbishop's Diocesan and Cathedral Library, numerous scientific colloquia took place, which brought the medieval and early modern manuscript holdings into the focus of research and the public.

Finger has been teaching medieval history at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf since 1987 , where he was made an honorary professor in 1995 . From 2004 to 2012 he was a board member of the Bibliothèques Européennes de Théologie (BETH) and from 2001 to 2013 deputy chairman, from 2013 to 2016 chairman of the Historical Association for the Lower Rhine . Also chair of the Gutenberg Society , member of the board of trustees of the Niederrhein Academy and the Research Institute for the Middle Ages and Renaissance (FIMUR) at the HHU Düsseldorf (since 1995). Finger is married, has two children and lives in Neuss .
