Marienwehr is a rural-agricultural district of Emden with 40 inhabitants (2012). The name goes back to the Virgin Mary. Marienwehr is one of the smallest parts of the city. Nearby is the inland sea Hieve (also known as the Little Sea ), which, however, already belongs to the municipality of Hinte . Only a strip of shore still belongs to the city of Emden. There is a water sports infrastructure and a holiday home area. The trek low flows through Marienwehr. The place is connected to the East Frisian waterway network through the canal and the short depression that branches off from it . Statistically, the city administration of Emden counts Marienwehr to the district of Uphusen .

history

Between 1926 and 1929 the drainage situation in the areas around the Great Sea to the northeast of Emden was improved. The background to this measure was that after the dike in the Larrelter and Wybelsumer Polder (1912-23) and the previous closure of the Larrelter Siels, there was a lack of drainage capacity. This was particularly noticeable in the areas far away from the river: heavy rains regularly caused flooding. For this reason, the short depression between Marienwehr and the Kleiner Meer was expanded and a new drainage canal was created between Tholenswehr and Herrentor, the Borssumer Canal or Borssumer Schöpfwerkskanal . It crosses under the Ems-Jade Canal between Wolthusen and Herrentor in a culvert . The canal then uses the drainage canal that was already created in connection with the construction of the Ems-Jade Canal, which in Herrentor runs parallel to the connecting canal to the Fehntjer Tief , which is also crossed by a culvert and continues via the Borssumer lock to Borssumer Siel.

Shortly before the beginning of the Second World War and especially in the years immediately afterwards, new housing developments were built north of the town center.

The school in Marienwehr is now closed, the previous building is used as a residential building. The volunteer fire brigade no longer exists either, and the house was sold to private individuals. The church was demolished at the end of the 19th century, only the church tower and the historic cemetery are still there. The Protestant Reformed parish of Suurhusen / Marienwehr holds a service once a month in the village, which is located in a separate room next to the former school. In road construction, Marienwehr was certified as having a "significant investment backlog" as part of the ongoing village renewal (as of September 2013). Together with Uphusen, Marienwehr was included in a village renewal program on July 1, 2011, for which a period of seven years is planned.

Attractions

None of the once three farms on the historic terp are in operation, two are used purely for residential purposes, and the third is also used for residential purposes, coupled with a commercial enterprise. The courtyards date from the period between 1766 and 1900 and are designed in the style of East Frisian Gulf courtyards . They are also under monument protection like the bell tower of the church and the former school, and the entire terp is also under ensemble protection.

economy

In Marienwehr there is still one full-time and two part-time farmers. The agriculturally used areas are exclusively grassland. Farmers use options for tourist accommodation just as little as those for direct marketing of their products.

The holiday home area includes around 160 weekend and holiday homes.

The Marienwehr is accessible via the Schleienweg. This is an unclassified road that leads south to the neighboring district of Uphusen. Marienwehr is the only district of Emden that is not on a classified street. A connection to Wolthusen can also be made via the Professor-Ritter-Weg, which leads along the low-lying trek. However, it is closed to larger vehicles with the exception of agricultural traffic. Due to the small number of inhabitants and the remote location, the traffic burden on Marienwehr is low. Primarily on weekends (especially in the summer months), the town center also picks up traffic to the holiday home area on the Little Sea.

Apart from the holiday home area, Marienwehr is hardly developed for tourism. The establishment of the Drei-Meere-Weg, which also extends to the neighboring communities of Hinte and Südbrookmerland in Emden , is intended to further boost tourism in the village, to which the current village renewal measures are also intended to contribute.

politics

In the 2013 federal election , the residents of the Uphusen / Marienwehr electoral district voted much more conservatively, but also significantly greener than the urban average, which was at the expense of the SPD. The latter was at 40.75 percent less clearly than the urban average before the CDU (32.93 percent), the Greens got 13.27 percent. For comparison: In the entire urban area, the SPD achieved 48.59, the CDU 25.98, the FDP 3.13, the Greens 9.15 and the Left 6.04 percent. Other parties accounted for 7.04 percent across the city.
