Location of Boltentor in the city of Emden

The Boltentorviertel in Emden is located within the Wallring and is statistically part of the city center. The six districts of the city center have a total of 8,677 inhabitants. In the area, a small number of historic houses survived the bombings of World War II. The Kunsthalle Emden , which opened in 1986, is located in Boltentor (or in the Boltentorviertel) .

traffic

The main street through the district is Boltentorstraße. It leads from the inner-city east-west traffic axis Jungfernbrückstraße / Abdenastraße in a north-westerly direction to Früchteburg . On the two-lane road, the houses are relatively close to the roadside. Since Boltentorstraße is the shortest connection from downtown Emden to the schools in Früchteburg and venues such as the North Sea Hall and the New Theater , it can be quite busy at peak times.

In the 1970s there were plans to build part of the inner-city traffic ring through the Boltentorviertel. Starting from the confluence of the Philosophenweg in the Auricher Straße / Neutorstraße, a relief road should lead along the rampart to the confluence of the Ringstraße in the Abdenastraße / Larrelter Straße. After the presentation of this draft plan by the planning office Dr. Schubert was criticized because the street would have led along the wall and the existing buildings would have had to be built over. The road was never built.

Culture and sights

The Natural Research Society of Emden is based in the Mühlentrift district on the street . The Kunsthalle Emden is also located in Boltentor, on the street Hinter dem Rahmen (which was already called that before the Kunsthalle was built). The architecture of the quarter is largely determined by post-war buildings, with single and multi-family houses alternating. The reason for this is to be found in the destruction of large parts of the district during the war. Only in some sections of Boltentorstrasse and on Friesenstrasse did several houses not suffer any war damage. A penthouse apartment has been built over an air raid shelter on Boltentorstrasse . At the southern end of Boltentorstrasse is a kiosk in the style of clinker expressionism from the Weimar Republic .

The Emden Schützen inaugurated their domicile on the Wall in 1952.

politics

In the 2013 federal election , the residents of the Boltentor electoral district voted much more conservatively, but also much greener than the urban average, which was at the expense of the SPD. The latter was only slightly ahead of the CDU with 37.13 percent (34.59 percent), the Greens got 11.6 percent. For comparison: In the entire urban area, the SPD achieved 48.59, the CDU 25.98, the FDP 3.13, the Greens 9.15 and the Left 6.04 percent. Other parties accounted for 7.04 percent across the city.
