Heinrich Schmidt (historian)

Heinrich Schmidt (born August 9, 1928 in Lehrte ) is a German historian and archivist.

life and work

Heinrich Schmidt was in 1959 in Göttingen with a dissertation on German cities chronicles the late Middle Ages to Dr. phil. PhD. From 1969 to 1976 he was director of the Oldenburg State Archives . After that he was professor for social history of the Middle Ages at the University of Oldenburg until his retirement in 1993 . From 1986 to 1998 he was chairman of the historical commission for Lower Saxony and Bremen . In addition, he was elected a corresponding member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia in 1970, to which he was a full member between 1978 and 2006 and a corresponding member again from 2006.

Schmidt published numerous monographs and essays on Oldenburg and East Frisian regional history and was the editor of several anthologies, handbooks and catalogs on topics of North German regional and cultural history.

On October 31, 2008 he was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Lower Saxony Order of Merit .
