Location of Früchteburg in the city of Emden

Früchteburg is a district of Emden and has 1255 inhabitants (as of September 30, 2012). In the district there are some cultural, educational and leisure facilities that have given Früchteburg the nickname cultural quarter .

location

The Hinter Tief , which connects Emden with the community of Hinte , flows past Früchteburg .

Residents

For several years, Früchteburg has consistently had more than 1200 inhabitants and is therefore one of the medium-sized districts of Emden. As of September 30, 2012, the population totaled 1,255; as of December 31, 2010 it was still 1,291. Of the 1255 inhabitants, 1153 were Germans and 102 foreigners, which corresponds to a proportion of foreigners of 8.1 percent. In Emden, this value is only exceeded by the neighboring district of Barenburg (8.3 percent). This can be traced back to a large student residence at the Emden University of Applied Sciences, in which many foreign students also live. The proportion of foreigners in all of Emden is 5.1 percent.

The majority of the inhabitants are Christian, whereby - as in the whole of East Frisia - the two major evangelical denominations dominate. In Früchteburg, 441 residents belong to the Lutheran Church and 267 to the Reformed Church . 126 of the 1255 inhabitants are catholic , while 421 are of other faith or non-denominational. The only church building in Früchteburg is the Baptist community center on Steinweg.

36.6 percent of the residents (460 people) are older than 65 years, which clearly exceeds the urban average of exactly 20 percent, which is due, among other things, to a larger residential complex for senior citizens. The age cohort of the up to 19-year-olds includes 146 people, or 11.6 percent of the population. In the age group between 19 and 24 there are another 121 people, so that the number of all people up to 24 years is 267 (or 21.3 percent). The comparative figures for the urban area are 18.5 percent (up to 19 years) and 25.6 percent (up to 24 years). In the age cohort up to 19 years of age, Früchteburg is clearly below the urban average; in relation to the up to 24-year-olds, the district also remains below the urban average, but no longer quite as significantly as for children and adolescents. The student dormitory also plays a role here.

politics

In the 2013 federal election , the residents of the Früchteburg electoral district voted much more conservatively than the urban average, which was at the expense of the SPD. The latter was only slightly ahead of the CDU with 42.39 percent (36.8 percent). For comparison: In the entire urban area, the SPD achieved 48.59, the CDU 25.98, the FDP 3.13, the Greens 9.15 and the Left 6.04 percent. Other parties accounted for 7.04 percent across the city.

Education and leisure

In addition to the vocational schools I and II (the former was the location of the Emden University of Applied Sciences until the early 1980s ), the Johannes-Althusius-Gymnasium (JAG) and the Früchteburg primary school are located. The Früchteburg School was completed in 1955. The high school at Treckfahrtstief is to move from its current location in the neighboring district of Barenburg to the site of the vocational schools I in 2015. Since the school name no longer fits, a new name is currently (as of September 2013) being sought.

Leisure facilities include the New Theater Emden , the North Sea Hall , the East Friesland Stadium by Kickers Emden and the sports facility of the largest Emden sports club, the Integrated Sports Club (ISV) Emden . The Friesentherme Emden all-weather swimming pool is also located in Früchteburg . It replaced the old Emden indoor pool and the Früchteburg outdoor pool and is a combined indoor and outdoor pool with sauna and wellness facilities. In addition, the Schützenplatz is located in this district, where the Emden Schützenfest takes place every year .

traffic

In terms of traffic, Früchteburg is mainly developed through the Steinweg and Schützenstraße. While the latter leads to the northern main arterial road of Emden, the Auricher Straße (later Bundesstraße 210 ), the Steinweg connects the district with the city center, crossing the Emder Wall . In the west, the Steinweg also provides the connection to the neighboring district of Conrebbersweg. The other streets are subordinate and mostly traffic-calmed . Schützenstraße is used by around 8,800 vehicles every working day (as of the current traffic development plan from the beginning of the 2000s), the southern section of Steinweg by around 8,300 and the middle section in the area of schools and cultural institutions by a good 9,700.

There are bike paths on both sides of the two main streets, as the several thousand students in particular go to their schools by bike. There are also exclusive cycle path connections near the New Theater over the Emder Wall to the city center, in the far north of Früchteburg over the Hinter Tief to Barenburg, near the JAG over the Hinter Tief to Auricher Straße and along the Larrelter Tief to Constantia.

In bus traffic, Früchteburg is served by line 2 of the Emden city traffic. It connects the main train station with Früchteburg and continues to Barenburg.

economy

Früchteburg is primarily an educational and leisure district and also serves as a residential location. There are only a few private companies. First and foremost, the shipping company Bockstiegel should be mentioned , which has its headquarters in a three-story office building on Steinweg. Due to its proximity to the city center, there are very few smaller retailers to be found. The northern area of Früchteburg is also connected to a shopping center on the opposite bank and on Auricher Straße via a bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the Hinter Tief, so that local supplies outside the district, but in the immediate vicinity thereof, are guaranteed.

Living

In the northern area of Früchteburg there are primarily single-family houses and a few two-story apartment blocks. In the middle area of the district, between Steinweg and Sielweg, blocks of flats with up to three floors dominate, plus a few terraced and single-family houses. In the south-western area there is a senior citizens' residential complex with single-storey buildings as well as single-family houses, near the city moat and Steinweg there is a four-storey student residence of the Emden University , which also accommodates foreign guest students.
