Tholenswehr is counted statistically by the city of Emden in Wolthusen / new building area (west of the Borssumer Canal). A total of 2260 inhabitants live here (December 31, 2010), but only a small part of them live in Tholenswehr. The name goes back to the Emden Senator Claas Tholen (1767-1846), who had an estate laid out there at the beginning of the 19th century.

The city's central cemetery is in Tholenswehr. In addition, the Zeldenüst mill is located in the district , although it no longer has wings and is now used as a residential building. The Treckfahrtstief that connects Emden with the Little Sea flows past Tholenswehr .

Between 1926 and 1929, a new drainage canal was built from Tholenswehr via Wolthusen to Herrentor , the Borssumer Canal or Borssumer Schöpfwerkskanal . It had become necessary because after the dike in the Larrelter and Wybelsumer Polder (1912–23) and the previous closure of the Larrelter Siels, there was a lack of drainage capacity. This was particularly noticeable in the areas far from the shore around the Great Sea , where heavy rainfall regularly caused flooding. The new canal branches off from the trek low in Tholenswehr and runs west past the Wolthuser village center in the direction of the Ems-Jade Canal , which is crossed under in a culvert . The canal then uses the drainage canal that was already created in connection with the construction of the Ems-Jade Canal, which in Herrentor runs parallel to the connecting canal to the Fehntjer Tief , which is also crossed by a culvert and continues via the Borssumer lock to Borssumer Siel. In this context, the short depression between Marienwehr and the Kleiner Meer was also expanded .
