Heavily dredged flat moor lake |
The Small Sea , also called Hieve , is a lake in East Frisia . It is located northeast of Emden in the area of the municipality of Hinte , the south-west bank borders on the city of Emden, the south-east and east bank on the municipality of Südbrookmerland .
With 93 hectares of water surface, the Small Sea is significantly smaller than the neighboring Large Sea in the municipality of Südbrookmerland . After sand was extracted at the end of the 1970s, the former Flachsee was up to 24 meters deep at its deepest point. In July 2006, the greatest depth was 19 meters, also in the middle of the dredging hole.
The Small Sea is popular as a leisure and recreation area. Above all, sailors, surfers, anglers and numerous weekend houses characterize the picture. These so-called Meerbuden are located in the area of the city of Emden, the municipality of Hinte and the municipality of Südbrookmerland. In contrast to the Great Sea, driving with motor boats on the shortest route is permitted on the Hieve, but you must not drive faster than 5 km / h in order not to destroy the natural habitat and the banks.
The connection to the East Frisian waterway network is made through the only outflow, the short deep : This flows into the trecking deep , which in turn represents the connection to the canal network of the city of Emden and thus ultimately also the connection to the Ems .
