Wolfgang Meckelein

Wolfgang Meckelein (born February 27, 1919 in Berlin , † December 6, 1988 in Stuttgart ) was a German geographer and politician .

Life and career

Meckelein grew up in Berlin and studied geography , geology , history and philology at the Humboldt University of Berlin from 1946 and at the Free University of Berlin from 1948 . In 1951 he received his doctorate. phil.

In 1955 he and Nikolaus Richter took part in the all-German expedition to the Sahara , about which a DEFA documentary was made.

In 1957 he became a professor at the Free University of Berlin. In 1959 he moved to the University of Stuttgart and became director of the Geographical Institute. In 1965 he became rector of the University of Stuttgart for two years. At that time he also became chairman of the Association of German University Professors.

In June 1968, Prime Minister Hans Filbinger brought Meckelein into his cabinet and gave him the role of State Secretary in the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Education under Minister Wilhelm Hahn . However, he had no seat in the cabinet and no voting rights. Meckelein held this office until 1972. Then he went back to the University of Stuttgart and devoted himself in particular to climate research and desertification.

Meckelein was a member of several specialist societies. In 1987 he received the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class.

Meckelein was married twice. His first wife, from whom he had a son and a daughter, died in 1970. He later married Ursula Klemstein.
