This was followed by an archive traineeship at the Osnabrück State Archives and at the Marburg Archive School (1978 to 1980). In the following 24 years, Kappelhoff worked alternately at the Stade State Archives and in the State Archives Administration in Hanover: first as a consultant in Stade, then in Hanover, finally from 1991 to 1999 as head of the State Archives in Stade and until the end of 2004 as head of the State Archives Administration of Lower Saxony State Chancellery . On January 1, 2005, Kappelhoff was appointed President of the Lower Saxony State Archives. He retired in June 2014.
