Georg Frickenstein
Georg Frickenstein (born January 9, 1890 in Weener , † September 5, 1946 in Emden ) was a liberal politician in Emden during the Weimar Republic and after the Second World War , the first Lord Mayor of Emden , appointed by the British military government . He died during his tenure as Lord Mayor of the seaport city .
Origin and education
Frickenstein came from a family of teachers in Weener in the Rhineland , in southwestern East Friesland . After attending grammar school in Leer , he completed an apprenticeship in banking in Emden, the city to which he remained connected for the rest of his life. In 1918 he became head of the Stadtsparkasse Emden , four years later director of the Girozentrale Ostfriesland. From 1926 he worked as a freelancer.
Political activity in the Weimar Republic
Frickenstein belonged to the DDP and was district chairman of the DDP until 1933, which held a strong political position in East Frisia in the initial phase of the Weimar Republic, but lost it in the Reichstag elections in May 1924 and in the following years until 1933 in the region almost politically became meaningless. In 1924 he was elected to the Emden Citizens' Board, then to the municipal magistrate and, from July 1931, as a replacement for Jann Fegter in the provincial parliament of the province of Hanover . Since he campaigned early on for the democratic forces to work together against the emergence of extremism , he was forced out of his offices by the National Socialists after the “ seizure of power ” in 1933 and also briefly arrested. In the following years he worked in an inconspicuous position in the commercial area at a shipping company in Emden. In 1941 he moved to Aurich because of the increasing bombing of Emden during the air war , where he found refuge with his political companion and personal friend Jann Berghaus .
First post-war mayor of Emden
On May 18, 1945, Frickenstein was appointed Emden's first post-war Lord Mayor by the British commander of the seaport city, Newroth.
