Genius beach

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Geniusstrand , also called Geniusbank , was a public sandy beach in the north of Wilhelmshaven that was accessible free of charge . It belonged to the Wilhelmshaven district of Voslapp . The beach owes its name to a shoal near the Heppenser fairway in the Inner Jade called Geniusbank , which previously reduced the depth of the Jade fairway to 6 meters, which severely limited the possible size of ships calling at Wilhelmshaven. The sand for the beach was extracted from the dredged material.

history

Map from 1906 with the genius bench in the inner jade

The Genius Beach was created as part of the so-called Hallbauer Plan. The plan, named after the head of the city expansion office Wilhelm Hallbauer , was developed in 1936/1937 and provided for the construction of a new naval port at the mouth of the Maade. As part of this plan, the Heppenser Groden was built by 1938. In a second step, the mudflats in front of Rüstersiel should be diked. For this purpose, a narrow strip of sand was washed up at a right angle to the Voslapper dike, which should serve as the basis for a new dike line in an easterly direction. The new dike should be the northern boundary line of the new Rüstersieler Groden and the starting point for the construction of another dike line in a southerly direction to the northeasternmost point of the Heppenser Groden. The Aufspülarbeiten began in spring 1939. The required sand is gathered from the Geniusbank in the Inner Jade. After the outbreak of war on September 1, 1939, the ongoing washing-up work was canceled. Further execution of the dyke construction plans was not pursued further due to the war. As a result of this aborted measure, a fine sandy beach was created, which for years after the end of the war became an attraction for those looking for relaxation in Wilhelmshaven and the surrounding area.

At the beginning of the 1960s, plans to dike the Rüstersieler Watt area were resumed. Nature itself had already made a start. Due to the changed flow conditions, which resulted from the flushing of the Genius beach and the embankment of the Heppenser Groden, the mudflat area in front of Rüstersiel silted up more and more. The embankment of the Groden began in 1963. The Genius Beach now received a real dike. In the area of the beach a tourism infrastructure developed, u. a. with the campsite Geniusbank .

After the completion of the Rüstersieler Groden in the early 1970s, the tidal flats in the north of Voslapp were also diked. As part of this land reclamation measure, the sandy beach in the Hooksiel area was created in the north of the new Groden . The Genius Beach lost a large part of its area due to the dike in the Voslapper Groden. Only a small part on the north-eastern edge of the Rüstersieler Groden has been preserved. From 1970 to 1972 also the beach was the built by Lower Saxony right on the edge Niedersachsenbrücke . The bridge structure protrudes 300 meters into the inner jade and serves as an unloading station for ships that supply coal to the coal - fired power station on the Rustersieler Groden .
