To date, the British Royal Navy has named a total of six of its ships HMS Edinburgh , after the Scottish capital Edinburgh . Another ship was named HMS Duke of Edinburgh .

HMS Edinburgh

  • The first HMS Edinburgh was a frigate of the 5th grade with 32 guns, which was acquired in 1707 by the Scottish Marine, but only two years later in Harwich as a breakwater was sunk.
  • The second HMS Edinburgh was a 3rd class ship of the line with 70 guns, originally called HMS Warspite and renamed HMS Edinburgh in 1716 . The ship was rebuilt twice (1721 and 1744) in Chatham Dockyard and finally scrapped in Plymouth in 1771 .
  • The third HMS Edinburgh was also a 3rd class ship of the line, with 74 guns. The ship was built in 1811. In 1846 steam engines and screws were installed. The ship was decommissioned and sold in 1865.
  • The fourth HMS Edinburgh was a Colossus- class tower ship that was renamed from HMS Majestic to HMS Edinburgh two days before being launched in March 1882 . The ship was decommissioned and sold in October 1910.
  • The fifth HMS Edinburgh was a 1939 overflowed from the deck light cruiser of the Town class . The cruiser was used in various scenes during World War II before it had to be abandoned and sunk in the Barents Sea in 1942 after a torpedo hit.
  • The sixth HMS Edinburgh is a Type 42 destroyer .

HMS Duke of Edinburgh

HMS Duke of Edinburgh was an armored cruiser of the same class that was launched in 1904 and sold in 1920.
