Amfreville is a village and a former French commune with 287 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Manche department in the Normandy region . It belonged to the Arrondissement of Cherbourg and the Canton of Sainte-Mère-Église .

With effect from January 1, 2016, the former parishes of Picauville , Amfreville , Cretteville , Gourbesville , Houtteville and Vindefontaine were merged to form Commune nouvelle Picauville of the same name . The administrative seat is in Picauville. On January 1, 2017, the formerly independent municipality of Les Moitiers-en-Bauptois was added. All former municipalities have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality .

Amfreville is located in northern France on the Cotentin peninsula , about 90 kilometers northwest of Caen , the capital of the Basse-Normandie region, about 47 kilometers northwest of Saint-Lô , the seat of the prefecture of the Manche department, about 30 kilometers southeast of Cherbourg-Octeville , the seat of the sub-prefecture of the Cherbourg arrondissement , and 5.6 kilometers west of Sainte-Mère-Église , the capital of the canton of Sainte-Mère-Église , at an average height of 16 meters above sea ​​level . The river Merderet forms the eastern boundary of the municipality .

In 1793, Amfreville received the administrative status of a municipality in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) and in 1801 the right to local self-government due to the administrative reform under Napoleon Bonaparte .

In 1812 Cauquigny was incorporated.

The parish church of Saint-Férréol in the district of Cauquigny was built in the 12th century but rebuilt in the 18th century. During the Second World War (1939–1945) the church was badly damaged and was not used again for church services until 1979 after a failed restoration .

The parish church of Saint-Martin is dedicated to Martin of Tours . It was built at the beginning of the 13th century. In the 16th century the choir was rebuilt and the roof vault was renewed in 1706. The nave and steeple were restored towards the end of the 18th century.

The first fortifications at the site of Amfreville Castle were built during the reign of William the Conqueror (from 1035 Duke of Normandy ). The buildings that have been preserved are the entrance gate, part of the residential building and the chapel . These buildings were constructed in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. A new residential building was built around 1740 but abandoned and destroyed in the course of the French Revolution. The outbuildings were partially renewed in the 20th century. Parts of the castle were entered in the supplementary list of historical monuments in 1965 .
