Haleine is a locality and one and a commune Déléguée in the French community Rives d'Andaine with 227 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Orne in the region of Normandy .

geography

The place Haleine is four and a half kilometers south of Bagnoles-de-l'Orne and in the extreme south of the Orne department. The Commune déléguée extends over an area of 2.62 km². The river Mayenne , which runs on the southern outskirts, represents the border with the neighboring Mayenne department . In the east, the municipality is bounded by the Vée , which flows into the Mayenne. In addition to the core town, the Commune déléguée also includes a few hamlets and the village of La Reinière, which is located directly on the Vée . The latter is directly adjacent to the settlement area of the neighboring town of Couterne . The D976 road, which runs through Haleine in an east-west direction, connects Domfront to Pré-en-Pail .

Before 2016, the neighboring communities of Haleine were La Chapelle-d'Andaine and Tessé-Froulay in the north, Couterne in the east, Thubœuf in the south and Geneslay in the west.

History and culture

Around 1150 the village was mentioned under the name Halena . This was originally the name for a nearby ford that made it possible to cross the Mayenne. The once formative agricultural sector has now lost much of its former importance. On the other hand, some industrial companies have settled there.

The Notre-Dame village church was built in 1845 and renovated in 1981 and 1995. A station for canoeing and kayaking has existed on the banks of the Mayenne since 1994 . From here, the athletes can ride downstream past Geneslay and Sept-Forges to Loré ; alternatively, it goes up the river to the neighboring Couterne. In 2005, the shore zone was also equipped with hiking trails, a picnic area and a jetty.

With effect from January 1, 2016, the previous municipalities of La Chapelle-d'Andaine , Couterne , Geneslay and Haleine were merged to form a Commune nouvelle called Rives d'Andaine and have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in La Chapelle-d'Andaine. The municipality of Haleine belonged to the arrondissement of Alençon and the canton of Bagnoles-de-l'Orne .

During the French Revolution , the population was 369 in 1793. Then it grew to the historic high of 540 inhabitants, which was reached in 1836. This was followed by a continuous decline, so that in 1901 only 389 people were counted. This trend continued in the 20th century until the lowest level was recorded in 1999 with 227 inhabitants. A phase of population growth then began.
