geography

The Commune déléguée Geneslay is located seven kilometers southwest of Bagnoles-de-l'Orne and in the extreme south of the Orne department. The river Mayenne , which runs along the southern edge of their area, forms the border with the neighboring Mayenne department . The area is also traversed by the Louvrières , Lindron and Subon streams . In the northeast the Commune déléguée is crossed for a few hundred meters by the national road D962; this represents the connection to Domfront and Alençon . The Commune déléguée extends over an area of 8.34 square kilometers.

Before 2016, the neighboring municipalities of Geneslay were Juvigny-sous-Andaine in the north, La Chapelle-d'Andaine in the northeast, Haleine in the east, Thubœuf and Rennes-en-Grenouilles in the south and Sept-Forges and Beaulandais in the west.

History and culture

The place was probably built in the 12th century and was initially called Saint-Hilaire-des-Bois . The current name was established a few centuries later and goes back to the word genêt . This means gorse and refers to the widespread occurrence of this plant in the municipality. Because of its location on the border of the historic regions of Normandy and Maine , the municipality was initially assigned to the Mayenne department, which belonged to Maine , when it was founded in 1790 as part of the French Revolution . In 1831 it was incorporated into the Norman Orne department. The community has always been strongly characterized by agriculture and suffered from the structural change towards an industrial society from the 19th century, which led to a sharp decline in population. It was not until the beginning of the 21st century that this trend was stopped by numerous modernization measures. Victor Vivier (1923–2003) comes from Geneslay and became known as a storyteller on a regional level.

The Catholic village church of Saint-Hilaire dates from the 17th century. It contains, among other things, an altarpiece from the early phase of its existence and numerous statues of saints.

With effect from January 1, 2016, the previous municipalities of La Chapelle-d'Andaine , Couterne , Geneslay and Haleine were merged to form a Commune nouvelle called Rives d'Andaine and have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in La Chapelle-d'Andaine. The municipality of Geneslay belonged to the arrondissement of Alençon and the canton of Bagnoles-de-l'Orne .

During the French Revolution, the population was 913 in 1793. It then grew to 1,090 people in 1831, before a sharp downward trend began and in 1901 only 477 people were registered. A historic low was recorded in 1999 with 209 residents. After that, a phase of significant growth began.
