geography

The place Tessé-Froulay is located in the extreme south of the Orne department and immediately south of Bagnoles-de-l'Orne . The settlement area of the hamlet of L'Érable , which belongs to the municipality, merges directly into that of the neighboring city. The river Vée runs along the eastern edge of the municipality and flows into the Mayenne shortly after the southern municipal boundary . The Mayenne also defines the course of the border to the neighboring Mayenne department , from which Tessé-Froulay is only separated by a strip around one kilometer wide. The highest point in the communal area is the 193 meter high Montsoret hill . The parish is part of the Normandy-Maine Regional Nature Park .

The neighboring municipalities of Tessé-Froulay are Bagnoles-de-l'Orne in the north, Couterne in the east, Haleine in the south and south-west and La Chapelle-d'Andaine in the west. Apart from Haleine, it is surrounded by much larger towns.

History and culture

At least since the 12th century the place was owned by the noble family Tessé de Froulay , who also gave it its name. With René de Froulay de Tessé, a Marshal of France emerged from it. In the course of the French Revolution , the family was expropriated, a self-governing municipality was founded under the name Tessé and this was assigned to the Mayenne department. In 1808 the northern part broke up and became independent as Tessé-la-Madeleine ; the newly created municipality was incorporated into Bagnoles-de-l'Orne in 2000 and has since formed the southern part of Bagnoles. The rest of Tessé was given its current name Tessé-Froulay in 1824 and, like all the communes in the region to the right of the Mayenne river, moved from the Mayenne department to the Orne department. The village church that exists today was built in the 19th century.

The structure of the economy changed fundamentally in the 20th century, as agriculture largely lost its importance as an essential basis for local jobs. Nevertheless, the population grew from the 1950s on, as Tessé-Froulay was an attractive place to live despite the weakness of its own economy; the majority of the residents found work in the larger towns that directly surround the community. From 1981 this led to the construction of new settlements and in 2002 the town center was redesigned.

During the French Revolution the population was 481 in 1793. Then it rose to the historical high of 676 inhabitants in 1831. After that, a steady downward trend began, which is why in 1901 only 345 people lived in the community. This trend continued until 1954, when it reached its lowest level of 195 inhabitants, and was followed by a significant increase.
