Essay is a French municipality with 531 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Orne in the region of Normandy ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Alençon and the canton of Radon . The parish is located in the Normandy-Maine Regional Nature Park .

history

  • At the time of the Gauls , Essay was the capital of Essuis, a people who immediately entered into negotiations with Julius Caesar .
  • In 1088, the Bishop of Bayeux mentions a castle in Essay as one of the most important of the Bellême family
  • Since the conquest of Normandy by Philip II , Essay has belonged directly to the crown.
  • Around 1361 Peter II of Alençon had the place surrounded with a wall and a moat. The essay became "Ville close".
  • In 1489 the castle, which was largely destroyed in the Huntdert Years War , is restored
  • In 1590, King Henry IV ordered the castle to be destroyed, but soon reversed the decision
  • In 1598, the Normandy estates referred to the castle as the robber's nest ("repaire de brigandage")
  • 1790–1801 Essay was the capital of a canton
  • In 1811 Mont-Perroux was incorporated, and in 1840 Echuffley
