Gandelain belongs to the arrondissement of Alençon and the canton of Damigny (until 2015: canton of Alençon-1 ). The municipality is part of the communauté urbaine d'Alençon . The inhabitants are called Gandelainais .

Gandelain is about 16 kilometers east-northeast of Alençon . The parish is part of the Normandy-Maine Regional Nature Park . Gandelain is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Ellier-les-Bois in the north, La Roche-Mabile in the northeast, Saint-Denis-sur-Sarthon in the east, Ravigny in the south, Champfrémont in the south and southwest, Lalacelle in the west and Ciral in the northwest .
