Ottokar Runze (born August 19, 1925 in Berlin ; † September 22, 2018 in Neustrelitz ) was a German actor , director , film producer and voice actor .

Life

The beginning as an actor

After graduating from high school, Runze attended the drama school of the German Theater in Berlin from 1947 to 1948 , where he made his stage debut in 1948 as Valère in Molière's The Miser . This was followed by stage engagements at numerous Berlin theaters (including Schillertheater , Hebbel Theater ). Runze was not only active as a stage actor, but also as a director.

In 1950, Ottokar Runze made his film debut in Kurt Hoffmann's crime thriller Five Under Suspicion . Four years later he played his first leading role in the fairy tale film King Drosselbart . Nevertheless, Runze's film appearances as an actor remained rare, u. a. in Slatan Dudow's Benthin family and Günter Gräwert's death in Astapowo .

Director and producer

Instead, Runze shifted his artistic focus more and more to directing. In the mid-1950s he worked as a dialogue director for the Hungarian director Josef von Báky , from whom he was also instructed as an assistant director. As a young director, Runze could hardly find a production company that would transfer a film project to him. Therefore, in 1963 he founded his own production company, aurora television Produktions-GmbH & co. , with which he initially produced documentaries and feature films for television, most of which he directed himself.

In 1973 he directed a movie with Der Lord von Barmbeck , for which he was awarded the German Film Prize in silver . During the production he not only directed, but also wrote the script together with Inken Sommer . Due to the success of the production, Runze turned and produced two sequels, In the Name of the People (1974) and The Knife in the Back (1975). He also received the German Film Prize in silver for In the Name of the Law and the Silver Bear at the Berlinale . A central theme of Runze's often socially and socially critical films is the question of guilt and atonement. In addition to the Lord von Barmbeck trilogy, his successes include the drama Verlorenes Leben , a homage to Fritz Lang with Gerhard Olschewski in the leading role, the crime film Der Mörder nach Georges Simenon (also with Olschewski), the drama Stern ohne Himmel about the Holocaust ( based on Leonie Ossowski ), the comedy Der Schnüffler with Dieter Hallervorden , the television play Der verntreute Himmel according to Franz Werfel , the tragic comedy Die Hallo-Sisters with Gisela May and Ilse Werner .

In addition, as a producer, Runze intensively promoted young talent. Young directors like Matti Geschonneck and Hans-Christoph Blumenberg were able to direct their first films through his production company.

For his work as director and production manager for short and feature films, Runze received a total of seven film tapes in gold and silver. In 2002 he was also honored with the honorary award of the German Film Prize for his life's work. In 2003 he was one of the founding members of the German Film Academy .

As a dubbing director and dialog book author, Runze was also responsible for numerous films. From 1956 to 1962 he mainly worked for MGM (MGM Synchronisations-Atelier) a. a. in the films Hell is in me , Ben Hur , King of Kings and 2001: A Space Odyssey . From the 1970s he was mainly responsible for films for Paramount Pictures and worked for Berliner Synchron .
