action

14-year-old Jan from Hamburg is disappointed shortly before the start of his vacation when his parents, both working, have to cancel their vacation in New York City . Jan could have seen a game of his favorite basketball team here.

Instead, he should spend a few exciting weeks on his uncle Fiete’s old cargo ship. Jan can only slowly get used to the situation, especially the ship's cook, Kojak, helps him.

One day Jan finds a stowaway in one of the cargo holds on one of his explorations. It is a girl of about the same age. At first very shy, she runs away from Jan and is discovered by a crew member. Jan, who doesn't want anything to happen to the girl, tells Uncle Fiete that he played a stowaway. Uncle Fiete, who is now angry, takes Jan to a hotel at the next anchorage and notifies his parents, who should pick him up from here. But Jan sneaks onto the ship and is now really a stowaway.

Here he finally manages to get to know the girl. Her name is Newena, who comes from a country where there is war . Her parents are both dead and her brother, she knows, lives in a children's home in Hamburg. That's where she wants to go.

Nevertheless, the two children only gradually come together, Newena is too disturbed. Misunderstandings and arguments ensue, in the course of which Newena inadvertently raises the alarm and runs away. Jan is discovered and handed over to his parents by Uncle Fiete. They have now been able to book the trip to New York, but Jan is only interested in Newena. In the children's home in Hamburg there is a reunion, both between Newena and Jan, as well as between the girl and her brother.

background

Newena's long journey - a film that is under the auspices of UNESCO , tells the trauma of war children with simple images. It does not mention a specific country in which the war is raging; the experiences of one theater of war are synonymous with those of another.

The young actors, 16-year-old Florian Jaeger from Berlin and 13-year-old Victoria Borislavova Borisova from Sofia , were also convincing .

The cinema release in Germany was November 8, 2001.

Reviews

“A largely touching story that lives mainly from its plastic main characters, but tends a little too much to moralize. The video technology also leads to uninspired experiments that damage the narrative style. "

“This adventurous children's film is a sensitively told story against any form of war. Thanks to the empathetic young actors, the work offers gripping entertainment. "
