Vadim Perelman (Ukrainian: Вадим Перельман ; * 1963 in Kiev ) is a Ukrainian - American filmmaker.

life and career

Perelman was born in Kiev as the only child to a Jewish couple. When he was nine years old, his father died in an accident. To escape the narrowness of the Soviet regime, his mother moved with him to Western Europe. After a few years in Vienna and Rome , where mother and son lived on the poverty line, they finally found a livelihood in Canada . After finishing school at the University of Alberta , Perelmann first studied various natural sciences until he turned to film studies. He studied at Ryerson University for two years in the Image Arts faculty and then founded his own production company for advertising and music videos in Toronto . His breakthrough in this area came in Los Angeles , where he shot TV spots for various internationally known brands. He also created various music videos. His video for Kelly Clarkson's Because of You received an MTV Video Music Award .

At the beginning of the new millennium, Perelman made the film adaptation of the novel House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III , whose film rights he had secured years earlier. Perelmann, who produced the independent film himself and co-wrote and directed the script, was able to win over well-known actors such as Ben Kingsley and Jennifer Connelly , the Iranian actress Shohreh Aghdashloo and the composer James Horner for the project . The film was released in theaters in 2003 and received three Oscar nominations and various other nominations and prizes for the performance of the actor, the adapted screenplay, the film music and the direction. His second film, the thriller Life Before My Eyes , was released in 2007. It was again a literary film based on a novel by Laura Kasischke . Uma Thurman and Evan Rachel Wood can be seen in the leading roles .
