Andre G. Dubus III (born September 11, 1959 in Oceanside (California) ) is an American writer who was particularly successful with the book House of Sand and Fog .

Life

He grew up in a writing environment. His father Andre Dubus (1936–1999) was one of the most renowned short story authors in the United States. His cousin James Lee Burke is a mystery writer.

Andre Dubus III attended Bradford College , where his father taught, and studied sociology at the University of Texas. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison , roamed the country, working as a probation officer, bartender, cleaner, bounty hunter, treatment center consultant, and carpenter.

His literary work was u. a. awarded the Pushcart Prize and the 1985 National Magazine Award for Fiction. In 1994 he was one of the three finalists for the Prix de Rome of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and with "House of Sand and Fog" in 1999 one of those of the National Book Award for Fiction. A recommendation in Oprah's Book Club made this novel a bestseller. In 2003 it was made into a film with Ben Kingsley .

Andre Dubus III currently lives in Newburyport, Massachusetts . He has been married to the dancer and choreographer Fontaine Dollas since 1989 and has three children with her.
