action

He only lives for his daughter Ola and has only the support of the helper Malina. Only these two people ensure that Bolesław does not go mad. One day the three of them receive a visit from Bolesław's brother Stanisław. Stanisław returns to his old homeland after a long stay in Davos . He suffers from incurable tuberculosis . With death in mind, Stanisław exudes a zest for life, which Bolesław initially repels in his grief. Stanisław enjoys the nature of his homeland and breathes it with all his heart. He enjoys life as if every day was the last day of his life. And he shows this too clearly. Bolesław feels disturbed in his grief. He encounters the doomed brother's excessive zest for life with increasing aversion and does not notice how much this sudden rivalry with his brother pulls him out of his own lethargy . When Stanisław dies and Malina marries her lover Michał, Bolesław decides to leave the loneliness of the birch grove and start a new life.
Reviews
“A terminally ill young man returns home from a sanatorium to his brother. Andrzej Wajda's literary film adaptation depicts the different characters of the two with their respective problems. A masterly psychological chamber play, poetic and full of atmosphere, convincing also in the inclusion of nature. "
