action

Włodek is 30 years old and has dropped out of Russian philology . He works as a translator from Russian . He lives with his wife Hanka and their young son in a two-room apartment with their in-laws. Life takes place in the living room; for Włodek and Hanka also the bedroom. People eat here and the father-in-law watches animal films on television all the time. Sticky flycatchers with which the father-in-law goes fly -hunting hang down from the ceiling . Włodek has his place of work here to work on his own literary works. Because actually he wants to be a writer.

He breaks out of this tightness every evening to get cigarettes. During one of these outbursts, he met the Polish student Irena in a club and began an affair with her. He is now starting to neglect his family and work. His wife constantly urges him to go to the housing cooperative in order to finally get an apartment for the family. He now uses every opportunity for an absence from work to meet with Irena. Irena gives him confidence and drives him in his literary endeavors. She introduces him to important people who can help his career. Finally he succeeds in getting a literary translation for a magazine. However, its translation is rejected due to linguistic deficiencies.

Włodek can no longer withstand the ambitious pressure from Irena. Exhausted, he returns to Hanka. But Hanka has also changed. Similar to Irena, she is now demanding that Włodek show the necessary commitment for a great career. He is now under similar pressure with Hanka as with Irena. Desperate, he gets caught in the flycatchers in the living room.
