Janusz Głowacki (born September 13, 1938 in Poznan ; † August 19, 2017 ) was a Polish writer and playwright .

Life

After studying polonics at the University of Warsaw , Głowacki began working with the Kultura magazine in Warsaw in 1964 , where he quickly attracted attention for his astute stories and feature pages. At the end of the 1960s he started work as a screenwriter. During this time, among other things, the film emerged Hunting Flies (Polowanie na muchy) directed by Andrzej Wajda and the cult film Rejs by Marek Piwowski . After martial law was imposed in 1981 , Głowacki left Poland and settled in the United States . From then on he wrote a number of dramas that are played internationally. His greatest success was the 1992 piece Antigone in New York , for which he was nominated for the 1994 Charles MacArthur Award for Outstanding New Pieces.
