action

The film takes place during the German occupation during the Second World War in Poland. It tells the story of young people who grow up during this difficult time. The protagonist Stach works in a carpenter's workshop that makes beds for the German concentration camps . There he got in contact with activists of the Armia Krajowa . There he also met the communist worker Sekuła, who was involved in the Gwardia Ludowa , a forerunner of the Armia Ludowa . Sekuła instructs Stach about the communists' goals. The Nazis put a complete ban on teaching Poles. Many young people of this time see no point in further training. However, Sekuła makes it clear to Stach how important a good education is for building a future Poland that has defeated fascism and capitalism . Stach begins to learn again, meets pretty Dorota during the underground studies and falls in love with her. Dorota is a dedicated underground youth leader. Stach follows her and tries to persuade a friend to join the group. When the uprising breaks out in the Warsaw ghetto , Stach and his friends are supposed to take in a group of Jews and help them. The overwhelming power of the German soldiers puts Stach and his friends in dire straits. Jasio Krone is pursued by the Germans and, surrounded in a stairwell, only sees the way out of suicide. Stach hides with Dorota for the night. The next morning Dorota tries to organize bread and is arrested by the Gestapo . After the lost uprising in the ghetto and Dorota's arrest, Stach took over her duties and set up a new resistance group against the Nazis.

background

Andrzej Wajda's debut film is a film about his own generation, who were prevented from growing up under normal circumstances by the war and the occupation. For the young actors who became stars of Polish cinema in the years that followed, it is also telling their own story. As a result, Wajda has not only made a historically interesting film, but also an exciting youth film .

Filming for the film began in March 1954. The premiere of the film took place on January 26, 1955.

Reviews

“Wajda's debut film raises questions of political and personal responsibility and interference. His staging style, the portrayal of the resistance and the drawing of his hero are subject to the official guidelines of the Polish cultural policy of the time, but at the same time undermine the description of historical connections that was common in the 1950s through psychological motivation and individual drawing.
