Zbigniew Hubert Cybulski (born November 3, 1927 in Kniaże in Poland , today Ukraine , † January 8, 1967 in Wroclaw , Poland) was a Polish actor.

Life

Zbigniew Hubert Cybulski is still known today as the " James Dean " of Poland . Like James Dean, in Ashes and Diamonds by Andrzej Wajda, he played a young rebel who became the model for an entire generation; Like James Dean, he was tragically killed in an accident when he tried to jump on a train that was already moving at the Wroclaw Central Station . He received international recognition for his work in Ashes and Diamonds and was nominated for the British Film Academy Award for Best Foreign Actor.

His trademark was dark sunglasses, which he wore permanently in almost all of his films. Marlene Dietrich got to know him on her Poland tour in 1966 in Wroclaw and wrote about him in her autobiography : “There has never been an actor in the theater who could act without using his eyes, and I know there won't be one give more. All the better! He will be remembered forever, and that's more than can be said about many actors. "

After graduating from drama school in Cracow , he played in theaters in Gdansk . From 1961 to 1967 he worked as an actor and director at the Teatr Ateneum in Warsaw .

Cybulski died on January 8, 1967. On the 30th anniversary of his death in 1997, Andrzej Wajda unveiled a memorial plaque on platform 3 of the station, commemorating the tragic accident in Cybulski.
