Roman Zdzisław Wilhelmi (born July 6, 1936 in Poznań , Poland ; † November 3, 1991 in Warsaw , Poland) was a Polish actor .

Life

Roman Wilhelmi received his acting training in the late 1950s at the State Drama School PWST in Warsaw. In 1958 he passed his acting exam and received his first leading role from director Aleksander Bardini in 1959 at the Teatr Ateneum in Warsaw with the role of Stanley in Endstation Sehnsucht by Tennessee Williams . Roman Wilhelmi was not only considered the Polish Marlon Brando because of this first leading role, but above all because of his acting style and his physical resemblance to the American actor . He received his first smaller film roles from directors such as Andrzej Munk and Aleksander Ford . He gained national popularity through his starring role in the most popular Polish television series of the 1960s, Four Tank Soldiers and a Dog . For his role as a radio journalist in Tomasz Zygadłos Ćma , he received the Actor Award at the Moscow International Film Festival in 1981 . In addition to his film work, Wilhelmi was above all a charismatic theater actor who belonged to the ensemble of the Teatr Ateneum in Warsaw for several decades . In 1991 he died of cancer .

The Polish magazine Polityka conducted surveys of its readers about the most important personalities in Poland at the turn of the millennium. In the category of the most important Polish actor of the century, Roman Wilhelmi came in 8th.
