Elżbieta Czyżewska (born May 14, 1938 in Warsaw , † June 17, 2010 in New York City ) was a Polish actress .

Life

Elżbieta Czyżewska studied acting at the State Drama School PWST in Warsaw and graduated from school in 1960. Already during her studies she played in the student cabaret STS . She made her film debut in 1959 in Bronisław Broks Cafe pod Minogą and from 1961 to 1967 she was a member of the ensemble of the Warsaw Dramatic Theater . Through various film and television roles, she became one of the most popular Polish actresses of the 1960s. In 1965 she was voted the most popular television actress by readers of the Warsaw Express Wieczorny . In 1967 she went into American exile with her American husband David Halberstam . Halberstam had sharply criticized the government of Władysław Gomułka in an article and was declared a persona non grata by the Polish regime . Czyżewska only returned to Poland for the shooting of Andrzej Wajda's film Everything for Sale and was then no longer allowed to appear in Poland until the early 1980s.

In the USA she continued her acting career mainly in the theater and appeared from time to time in international film productions. Based on her experiences, Agnieszka Holland wrote the script for the film Anna… Exile New York . Elżbieta Czyżewska lived in the USA until her death. Before her marriage to the journalist Halberstam (they divorced in 1977) she was married to the Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski .
