Stanisław Sylwester Bareja (born December 5, 1929 in Warsaw , Poland ; † June 14, 1987 in Essen ) was a Polish film director , best known for his comedies from the 1970s. He was also a screenwriter and actor .

life and work

Bareja graduated from the Łódź Film School with a degree in directing in 1954 . He then worked for a few years as assistant director to Jan Rybkowski and Antoni Bohdziewicz , until he was allowed to direct his first feature film, the comedy The Man of His Wife , in 1961 . Even with his first work, a cheerful contemporary story, he was able to deliver an entertaining flick that, in addition to various gags, mainly contained essential character studies. Critics once denied him talent, so that he specialized in film comedies in the following years. His comedies from the 1970s enjoy cult status in his native Poland. He wrote the scripts for these films mostly together with the satirist Stanisław Tym .

Bareja preferred to cast Wiesław Gołas as an actor in his films, whom he had known since his collaboration in The Man of His Wife (1961).
