The First Day of Freedom is a Polish feature film from 1964. It is based on a play by Leon Kruczkowski .
action
The film takes place shortly after the end of World War II . Most of the German population has fled to the west. In a small formerly German town, the doctor Dr. Rhode and his daughters Inga, Luzzi and Lorchen. A group of Polish officers who have been freed from German captivity comes to this town. Inga is raped by a former Polish slave laborer. The Polish officer Jan defends the girl against further attacks by her fellow countrymen who are drunk with victory. However, when the SS man Otto and his colleagues return to town, the story ends tragically. Otto is Inga's fiancé and is killed after a fight with the Polish soldiers. Jan is forced to kill Inga because she had supported Otto.

Awards
The film was invited to the Cannes Film Festival in 1965 to take part in the competition for the Palme d'Or. When it came to the award of the prize, however, he received nothing. In the same year, the film was awarded the Złota Kaczka film prize (prize of the Polish specialist film film ) as the best film of 1964.
