Konrad Swinarski
Konrad Swinarski (born July 4, 1929 in Warsaw , † August 19, 1975 near Damascus , Syria ) was a Polish film and theater director .
life and work
Swinarski was born the son of Karol Świnarski, a commander of the 2nd Podhale Rifle Regiment in Sanok . Swinarski first studied art in Katowice and Sopot in the early 1950s , then set design in Łódź , and theater direction in Warsaw . While studying directing at PWST in Warsaw, he assisted Erwin Axer at the Modern Theater in Warsaw. He finished his studies in 1955. However, he did not receive his diploma as a director until 1972. At that time he was already considered a star director of the Polish theater.
He made his debut as an independent director in 1955 at the Theater in Kalisz and in the same year went to Germany , where he worked at the Berliner Ensemble until 1957 . He assisted Bertolt Brecht there until his death , whose pieces became the main work of Swinarski's early years. He was part of the ensemble that completed and performed Brecht's last production of Fear and Misery of the Third Reich after Brecht's death.
After his return Swinarski worked on all major Warsaw theaters and in Gdansk . Now and then also in Germany, especially in the Federal Republic. In the 1960s he staged at the Berlin Schiller Theater and was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen . In 1964 he was awarded the German Critics' Prize.
In 1965 the fruitful collaboration with the Old Theater (Teatr Stary) in Krakow began , which lasted until his untimely death. This is where his most famous productions were made. His staging of Adam Mickiewicz's funeral service , which premiered in 1973 , became legendary .
In 1975 he began work on Hamlet by William Shakespeare . However, the premiere took place only after his death. He was tragically killed in a plane crash near Damascus .
Swinarski created an individual style of directing that was to have an impact on younger generations of directors even after his death. Above all, the works of directors such as Jerzy Grzegorzewski and Krystian Lupa , then in the subsequent generation of directors such as Krzysztof Warlikowski and Grzegorz Jarzyna , are aesthetically related to Swinarski.
