Tadeusz Różewicz (born October 9, 1921 in Radomsko , † April 24, 2014 in Wroclaw ) was a Polish writer .

Life

Tadeusz Różewicz grew up as the son of a civil servant in Radomsko. During the German occupation in World War II , he was initially a factory worker. In 1941 he joined the Polish Home Army (AK), his brother, also an AK fighter, was executed by the Gestapo at the end of 1944 . After the war he studied art history in Cracow and wrote his first poems. His first volume of poetry appeared in 1947. Within a decade he was considered the “youngest Polish classic” and later - until Wisława Szymborska received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1996 - as the “greatest living poet of his language”. In the late 1950s, he turned primarily to acting. In 1960 Die Kartothek premiered in Warsaw , in 1963 his most famous piece, Die Zeugen or Our Little Stabilization . In the 1980s he was one of the most played dramatists in the GDR; this still applies to the Polish theater today.

Tadeusz Różewicz lived in Wroclaw as a poet, playwright, storyteller and screenwriter . He has been awarded numerous prizes. Günter Grass dedicated a poem to him with the title “Somebody from Radomsko”.

His work has been translated into many languages; his translators into German are Karl Dedecius , Peter Lachmann , Ilka Boll , Christa Vogel , Armin Dross, Paul Pszoniak, Alois Woldan, Henryk Bereska , Bernhard Hartmann and Roswitha Matwin-Buschmann .

His brother Stanisław Różewicz (1924-2008) was a film director.
