Andreas Lawaty (born March 10, 1953 in Bytom , Poland ) is a German historian and Slavist .

Andreas Lawaty studied Slavic Studies and Eastern European History at Portland State University in Portland and Frankfurt am Main . From 1979 to 1981 he worked as a research assistant at the Historical Commission in Berlin . In 1982 he received his doctorate from the Justus Liebig University in Giessen with a thesis on the end of Prussia from a Polish perspective under Klaus Zernack . From the same year until 2002 he worked as a research assistant, since 1986 also as a deputy director, at the German Poland Institute in Darmstadt. From 2002 to 2010 he was director at the Nordost-Institut . Lawaty has been a member since 2006 and was President of the Johann Gottfried Herder Research Council from 2008 to 2011 . from May 2010 to 2016 he was a research assistant at the Nordost-Institut.

His main research interests are the history of Poland, the history of German-Polish relations, the history of ideas and concepts, the comparative history of East Central Europe and Russian cultural history. For his services to German-Polish understanding, he was awarded the Cavaliers Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland by the Republic of Poland in 2000. In 2018 he received the Medal of Honor from the University of Wrocław .
