Krzysztof Ruchniewicz (born January 27, 1967 in Wrocław / Breslau ) is a Polish historian , German researcher, professor at the University of Wrocław , director and professor of contemporary history at the Willy Brandt Center for German and European Studies there .

Career

Ruchniewicz studied history at the University of Wrocław, the Saarland University in Saarbrücken and the Philipps University in Marburg . He was a scholarship holder of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation from 1994–1996 and a scholarship from the Foundation for Polish Science - Fundacja na rzecz Nauki Polskiej in 1997 . His master's thesis (1991) was entitled “Enno Meyer a Polska i Polacy. Z badań nad początkami Wspólnej Komisji Podręcznikowej PRL-RFN “(Enno Meyer, Poland and the Poles. From research on the beginnings of the joint German-Polish textbook commission) (Supervisor: Wojciech Wrzesiński); He wrote his doctoral thesis in 2000 on the topic: “Warszawa-Berlin-Bonn. Stosunki polityczne w latach 1949–1958 “(Warsaw-Berlin-Bonn. Political relations in the years 1949–1958) (PhD supervisor: Wojciech Wrzesiński); he qualified as a professor in 2007: “Polskie zabiegi o odszkodowania niemieckie w latach 1944 / 45-1975” (Polish efforts for German reparations in the years 1944 / 45-1975). Since 1991 he has been teaching at the Institute of History at the University of Wrocław, since 2009 Associate Professor at the University of Wrocław, and since 2013 Associate Professor. He is the founding director of the Willy Brandt Center for German and European Studies (2002) and its long-time director, and at the same time professor for contemporary history (since 2002 until today, with one interruption in 2007-9). Ruchniewicz is the author of numerous publications. He is a member of several scientific committees in Germany and abroad and an active participant in several debates on the status of German-Polish relations, the Polish culture of remembrance and the current situation in Germany.

In 2011 Krzysztof Ruchniewicz was awarded the Gold Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland . In 2019 he was honored with the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his commitment to German-Polish friendship and his scientific work in this area.
