from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arno Herzig (born June 19, 1937 in Albendorf , Glatz district , Silesia ) is a German historian with a focus on the early modern period .

Arno Herzig passed the Abitur at the high school Josephinum Hildesheim . He studied history, German and geography at the University of Würzburg . There he received his doctorate in 1966 on the German Order Coming in Würzburg. He completed his habilitation in 1973 and taught early modern history at the History Department of the University of Hamburg from 1979 until his retirement in 2002 .

Herzig has numerous research projects and publications, including on German-Jewish history , the history of the Reformation and confessionalization, as well as the history of Silesia. He introduced the concept of re-Catholicization , which is based on confessionalization, into early modern research.

His preoccupation with Silesia led to a commemorative publication on his 70th birthday that was only written by Polish authors. This is unique for a German historian. Herzig has been a corresponding member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia , a member of the Historical Commission for Silesia and the Leo Baeck working group since 2002 . In 2010, Herzig received the Silesian Culture Prize of the State of Lower Saxony for his essays and monographs on the history of Silesia .
