history

Kreisau was best known through the von Moltke family. The Prussian Field Marshal Helmuth Karl Bernhard Graf von Moltke , Chief of Staff in the German-Danish War in 1864, in the Prussian-Austrian War in 1866 and in the Franco-German War of 1870/71, acquired the estate on August 1, 1867 as a retirement home.

His great-great-nephew Helmuth James von Moltke was one of the leading figures in the Kreisau Circle resistance group . In 1942 and 1943, three secret meetings of this group took place in the Berghaus, which belonged to the estate as the family home. A possible post-war order without Adolf Hitler was discussed here.

After the war, together with the province of Silesia, Kreisau came under Polish administration and was renamed Krzyżowa. Out of the need to keep the memory of the Kreisau Circle alive, the Kreisau Foundation for European Understanding , in which Poles and Germans , but also people from other European countries and the USA were involved , arose in 1989/1990 as part of the European citizens' movement . On the estate of a German-Polish Krzyżowa found on 12 November 1989 Reconciliation - Fair held at the then-Chancellor Helmut Kohl and the then Polish Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki took part. Helmut Kohl visited the place again in 1998 when the International Youth Meeting Center Kreisau was opened.
