Podhale riflemen (Polish: Strzelcy podhalańscy ) is the name of the Polish mountain troops .

The units were founded in 1918 from volunteers from the Podhale region as elite units of the Polish armed forces . After Poland's defeat in September 1939 , they were reorganized in France in 1940. In early 1940 they took part in the Battle of Narvik . After the defeat of France , parts of the unit withdrew to England, while others joined the French Resistance . The tradition of the Podhale Riflemen is continued today by the 21st Podhale Rifle Brigade of today's Polish Army .

Until 1945 the Podhale riflemen carried the Goralenkreuz , a swastika , which is considered a traditional symbol in this region. They currently carry the edelweiss badge of the Imperial and Royal Kaiserschützen (the tradition of the Polish land forces was and is still partly shaped by the Imperial and Royal Army , from whose ranks most of the founders of the Polish army came in 1918) as well as the mountain troops of the German Bundeswehr and the Alpine troops of the Austrian Army .
