Weiser is a Polish feature film from 2001. It is a novel adaptation based on the novel Weiser Dawidek by Paweł Huelle .

action

The film is set in Wroclaw . In the summer of 1967 Paweł, Piotr, Szymek and Elka were close friends. They are all 12 years old and spend a summer together. This summer they meet the Jewish boy Dawid Weiser. They call him Dawidek. The outsider Dawid makes himself popular with the children with a discovery. He gives them a rifle from an old ammunition store. Now the children are starting to play war in an old cemetery. They are frightened by a crazy man. The children plan a real blast on a river. During the preparations, Dawid suddenly disappears without a trace and never appears again.

30 years later, Paweł comes back to Poland from Germany. He is accompanied by his German girlfriend Juliane. Paweł is haunted by this story even 30 years after Dawid disappeared. He goes in search of his old friends. But the secret can no longer be reconstructed after such a long time, and the old friends no longer want to be reminded of it.

Paweł Huelles novel Weiser Dawidek is set in Gdansk . Director and screenwriter Marczewski moved the venue to Wroclaw.

“The search for the truth is wrapped up in a crime fiction structure in which flashbacks gradually gain the upper hand. Beautifully photographed, interesting in terms of staging, the film ultimately gets bogged down in too many different stories. "

Awards

The film ran in the competition at the Berlinale 2001 , but received nothing at the award ceremony. At the 2001 Polish Film Festival in Gdynia , the film won the award for the best editing and the best sound. Cinematographer Krzysztof Ptak received the Polish Film Prize in 2002 .
