Wojciech Szczęsny Marczewski (born February 28, 1944 in Litzmannstadt ) is a Polish film director .

Life

Marczewski began to study directing at the Łódź Film School in 1962 , which he interrupted in 1964 to study history and philosophy. He finished his studies in 1969, but did not receive his directing diploma until 1998. In the 1970s he worked in Poland as a director and production assistant and wrote screenplays. He realized small film productions for Polish television. His first feature film was Nightmares from 1979. For his second feature film Schauder , he received the Silver Bear and other prizes at the 1982 Berlinale . He also received the Silver Lion at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia . This should be his last feature film before the political change in Poland. Since 1984 he has been teaching at the Copenhagen Film School .

In the 1990s he was director of the British National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield, near London. It wasn't until 1991 that he brought out a new feature film. Escape from the cinema "Freedom" (Ucieczka z kina Wolność) received several awards at the Polish Film Festival, including in the " Best Film " category . In 2000 he filmed the novel Weiser Dawidek by Paweł Huelle . The film Weiser took part in the 2001 Berlinale competition. In 2002 he was one of the co-founders of Andrzej Wajda's Warsaw School of Film Directing . He is still a lecturer there today. He is also a professor at the State University of Film, Television and Theater Łódź .

Awards

In 2011 Marczewski was appointed officer of the Order Polonia Restituta .
