Vittorio Grigolo

Vittorio Grigòlo (born February 19, 1977 in Arezzo ) is an Italian opera singer ( tenor ).

life and career

Vittorio Grigòlo grew up in Rome. He received his first musical training in the choir of the Sistine Chapel . At the age of 13 he sang the shepherd boy in Tosca in the Rome Opera House . It was Luciano Pavarotti aware of him. He then studied for five years at the Scuola puerorum at the Sistine Chapel .

In 1999 he made his operatic debut in the role of Don Ottavio in Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari . In 2003 he made his debut at La Scala in Milan in the opening concert of the Verdi year. This appearance was the starting point of his international career. In the same year he sang Tony in West Side Story at La Scala , followed by a tour of Japan and Lebanon. He then sang on the opera stages in Rome, Venice, Geneva, Zurich, Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Valencia, Avignon, Paris, Los Angeles, New York, Washington, Sydney, Beijing and at the Vienna State Opera. His 2010 debut in Covent Garden , where he stepped in for the sick Rolando Villazón at the last minute , was also his role debut as Des Grieux in Manon by Jules Massenet. The production of Laurent Pelly and Grigòlo's performance were equally celebrated by the English press. Tim Ashley wrote in the Guardian of London that Grigòlo had everything you need for the role, a voice that flows, he looks great and has a natural instinct for the theater.

On January 21, 2017, a new production of the opera Romeo et Juliette by Jules Massenet by Bartlett Sher with Grigòlo in the role of Romeo premiered at the Metropolitan Opera . The production, which was co-produced with La Scala in Milan and the Salzburg Festival, was broadcast in cinemas around the world.

Grigòlo worked with well-known conductors such as Lorin Maazel , Zubin Mehta , Riccardo Muti , Daniel Oren etc. His repertoire includes the great roles of his subject, including Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor , Alfredo in La traviata , Rodolfo in La Bohème , Danilo in The Merry Widow , Almaviva in The Barber of Seville , Don Carlos in Don Carlos , The Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto , Cassio in Otello , Hoffmann in Hoffmanns Erzählungen , Corrado in Il corsaro , Nemorino in L'elisir d'amore , etc. Vittorio Grigolo sang alongside great singers of the time such as Anna Netrebko , Renée Fleming , Edita Gruberová , Pretty Yende and Angela Gheorghiu .

In addition to his international stage presence, Vittorio Grigòlo is also active as a lieder, concert and oratorio singer. On November 28, 2010 he was a contributor to Advent Festival Music . Gala concert from the Frauenkirche Dresden .

He started his musical career in pop music as a member of Simon Cowell's boy band Il Divo , which released the cross-over album In the Hands of Love and which also includes a duet with Welsh singing star Katherine Jenkins . Il divo reached number 1 in the UK Classica Charts in 2004. On September 16, 2011, his album Arrivederci was released .

Harassment allegations

Grigolo harassed a female choir member on stage on a trip to Japan by the ensemble of the Royal Opera House London in September. After the suspension that followed the incident, he was released on the basis of the investigation that has now been carried out, claiming that his behavior was unacceptable. The New York Metropolitan Opera also took action and parted ways with Grigolo.
