Hermann Stern (church musician)

Hermann Stern (born November 8, 1912 in Abetifi , Ghana ; † January 9, 1978 in Hohengehren ) was a Protestant church musician , composer and the first regional church music director in the history of the Evangelical Church of Württemberg.

Life

Hermann Stern grew up as the child of a missionary from the Basel Mission in Ghana. Stern then learned the teaching profession in Stuttgart, but from 1936 worked as a church musician (organist and choir director) in Ebingen , from where he traveled to the Sudetenland on his motorcycle with Martin Friedrich Jehle (director of the Ebingen music house Johannes Jehle) in June and July 1938 , traveled to Prague and on to Romania.

On April 1, 1940, he went to Stuttgart as a regional youth singing warden , where he later worked as chairman of the Association of Protestant Church Choirs and as church music director in Württemberg. Most recently he was regional church music director of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg , the first to be awarded this title in 1973.
