Life

Jakob Brüllmann was born in Weinfelden as the oldest of ten children. The house he was born in was the "Haus zur Schwärzi" in Weinfelden, which still functions as a schoolhouse today. His father was a stonemason , and that's how Jakob Brüllmann discovered his craft and design skills. After graduating from secondary school, he received his first training in his father's company before he gained further experience with a stone cutter in St. Gallen . Due to his talent, he made it to the Munich School of Applied Arts in 1892 and then studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts from 1895 . He was trained there by Wilhelm von Rümann, among others . He gained practical experience for 3 years with sculptors Drumm and Prof. Floßmann in Munich.

In 1900 Jakob Brüllmann moved to Stuttgart. On September 11th, 1900 he married Luise geb. Stadler. The native Swiss artist also took on German citizenship there. In the following years he created many works of art in the greater Stuttgart area, but also continued to do so in his homeland.

Brüllmann took part in numerous competitions and won many prizes. For many years he was a member of the board of directors of the Stuttgart Secession and was considered a wise advisor and teacher to the young generation of artists. As a sensitive person, he was always guided by a fine sense of tact in his criticism of other artists.

Jakob Brüllmann died on December 28, 1938 from a serious heart condition. He found his final resting place in the quiet forest cemetery in Stuttgart . His grave is still adorned with a life-size young fawn that he created himself.

Individual works

Busts

One of Jakob Brüllmann's activities was the creation of busts. This includes both related and famous people.

1905: Erlenhof estate in Pfullingen

Louis Laiblin (1861–1927) was very wealthy through a family business. Laiblin used this fortune for many foundations and the city of Pfullingen. This awarded him honorary citizenship of the city of Pfullingen for his actions. Laiblin set up the Erlenhof as a weekend seat. For this purpose he had a wall fountain built by Jakob Brüllmann in 1905 for 1,800 marks. A first photo of the Erlenhof exists from August 3, 1909.

1911: Arnold Geiser Fountain in Zurich

Arnold Geiser Fountain

One of the greatest works by Jakob Brüllmann is the Arnold Geiser Fountain on Bürkliplatz in Zurich. Arnold Geiser was the city architect of Zurich from 1876 to 1907. In his will he bequeathed 40,000 francs to the city for the construction of a public monumental fountain . To this end, the city of Zurich has launched a competition in which Jakob Brüllmann took 1st place. So he was entrusted with the execution of the work. The fountain was inaugurated on October 20, 1911. The fountain was made from a 800-pound block of light-colored shell sandstone from the Würenlos quarries . On a pedestal is a strong young man who is trying to tame a huge bull. The fountain symbolizes the restraint of the shoots.

1917: Reformation monument in Stuttgart

Reformation monument in Stuttgart

Main article: Reformation Monument (Stuttgart)

The highly regarded Reformation monument at the Hospital Church in Stuttgart was created by Jakob Brüllmann in 1917 on the occasion of the four hundredth anniversary of Luther's posting of the theses. The symbolic representation of the resurrection consists of three parts: In the middle part of the fenced-off facility, inserted between two buttresses, the victorious Christ resurrected from a sarcophagus sits enthroned with the victory flag. It is surrounded by seated figures of the German reformer Martin Luther and the reformer of Württemberg Johannes Brenz, as well as reliefs with scenes from rural life and reliefs and inscription panels from the Reformation era. The figure of Christ was in an air raid on 12./13. Destroyed September 1944 and restored by Jakob Brüllmann's son Emil Brüllmann. The Stuttgart Reformation Monument , together with the Reformation Monument in Geneva, is an important and novel further development of the monument concept.

1918–1922: Oswald Church Memorial in Stuttgart-Weilimdorf

Main article: Parish Church of St. Oswald (Weilimdorf)

Between 1918 and 1922 the monument to the fallen was erected at the Oswaldkirche in Stuttgart-Weilimdorf in honor of those who fell in the First World War. Two inscriptions adorn the column: Fearless and faithful, 121 sons of the community fell for fatherland and homeland - indelible thanks this time consecrated the brave on the one hand and no one has greater love than that he surrenders his life for his brothers on the other. A plaque in honor of the victims of the Second World War was added later .

1922: Lauffen war memorial

Lauffen war memorial

In 1922, the Lauffen war memorial was erected in front of the town hall in Lauffen in honor of the victims in the First World War. This is also what the inscription says: In honor of the 189 victims in World War 1914–1918. Erected by the city and town council in 1922. When the shipping canal was built in 1949, the war memorial had to be demolished. Only the name tablets and the sandstone column with four antique relief heads were kept. In 2004 the originally 5 meter high stone column was rebuilt in a modified form.

1924: War memorial 1914/18 in Ludwigsburg

War memorial 1914/18 in Ludwigsburg (excerpt)

Main article: War memorial 1914/18 (Ludwigsburg)

The war memorial, erected in 1924 in the old cemetery in Ludwigsburg , is a stone circle that is enclosed by a hedge that is taller than a man, behind which nine larger than life steles with recessed reliefs by Jakob Brüllmann are set up in a ring . The main relief shows the warlike figure of the Archangel Michael with the flaming sword. Six reliefs are lined up around it with sensitive, antique depictions of fighters and two reliefs that show mourning mothers with their children.

1931: Crucifix in the Martinskirche in Filderstadt

The Martinskirche in Filderstadt-Sielmingen was originally consecrated in 1310. However, this building is no longer preserved. Rather, the church was probably rebuilt in 1488/1489. As a result, the church was rebuilt several times. In the course of the renovation in 1931, the previous damaged crucifix was also replaced. The senior teacher Höss from Sielming donated a new crucifix in memory of his son Ernst, who died in 1918, which Jakob Brüllmann created from travertine stone. An inscription on the back of the crucifix still testifies to the foundation today.

1931: Thomas-Bornhauser-Brunnen in Weinfelden

Thomas Bornhauser , poet and democratic statesman, worked as a teacher in Weinfelden and later became a pastor in Arbon. In his honor, the city of Weinfelden commissioned Jakob Brüllmann to build a fountain for the town hall square in 1931. Jakob Brüllmann first made four plaster models that he presented to the city for selection. The Rorschacher sandstone fountain shows a mother with her children. This is to remind of Bornhauser's social feeling for the people, their willingness to help those in dire need. There are two inscriptions on the fountain (left and right of the relief portrait by Thomas Bornhauser): THE PRE-FIGHTER OF THE CONSTITUTION OF 1831 (west side) / THE POET AND AWAKENER OF OUR PEOPLE'S SONG (east side). The fountain was inaugurated in 1931 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Regeneration Constitution. The father of this first liberal constitution was Thomas Bornhauser. In 2012 the fountain is to be extensively restored as part of a complete renovation of the Weinfelder Rathausplatz.

1933: Christ sculpture in Sillenbuch

Sillenbuch, Christ sculpture in the new location

In 1932 a private individual donated the sculpture of Christ carrying the cross to the Martin Luther Church in Sillenbuch. According to his request, the sculpture was placed above the foundation stone certificate in the vestibule on a plinth that was specially built into the wall for this purpose. After the ceiling was suspended during the renovation of the church in 1982, the plastic had to be removed. Since then, the plastic has been considered lost. The sculpture did not reappear until 2008 for the 75th anniversary of the church. After its restoration, it was officially inaugurated again on April 1, 2012 at a new place in the staircase to the church hall.

1938: Gravestone in the forest cemetery in Stuttgart

Jakob Brüllmann's grave in the Stuttgart forest cemetery is decorated with a fawn that he created himself while he was still alive. The fawn, lying on a pedestal at the head of the grave, watches over its final resting place. As with all of his works, Jakob Brüllmann first made plaster models of the deer. Next, he made bronze models of his favorites, as shown in the first picture. Only then did he make the actual stone sculpture.

The fawn has now been attacked by environmental influences.

War memorials

The architect Friedrich Haußer and the sculptor Jakob Brüllmann, who built the war memorial in Ludwigsburg in 1914/18, had already worked together on the construction of the cemetery of honor in 1916. Later there was at least one more collaboration on a war memorial: in 1925 they jointly created the war memorial at St. Martin's Church in Steinheim an der Murr .

“The time after the First World War was above all the time of countless memorials and cemetery buildings. Haußer also devoted himself to this area to a greater extent at the time when general building activity was paralyzed. ”Among other things, he was responsible for the grave border for the resting place of the last Württemberg King Wilhelm II in the Old Cemetery (1922).

During the Second World War , Brüllmann had already emerged in 1917 with another monument, the highly regarded Reformation monument in Stuttgart. After the war, Brüllmann also created other war memorials in the other Württemberg cities.

The monuments of which there are illustrations seem more conventional (lion, deer, soldiers). The Weilimdorfer reliefs are badly weathered so that no statement can be made about them. The representations of ancient heads on the monument in Lauffen are unusual, but due to a lack of sources, they cannot be interpreted.
